Planning guidance
Common mulch estimate questions.
How deep should bark mulch be applied?
Apply bark mulch 2–4 inches deep. New beds typically need 3–4 inches, while refreshment applications need 1–2 inches. Keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks.
Does bark mulch attract termites?
Bark mulch itself doesn't attract termites, but thick layers can create moist conditions. Maintain a 6-inch gap between mulch and building foundations.
How much extra mulch should I buy?
A 5–10% allowance is common for standard beds. Irregular shapes, slopes, or uncertain measurements may justify 10–15%. The calculator suggests a starting point that you can change.
Should I use bags or bulk mulch?
Bagged mulch is practical below 1 cubic yard for small beds. Between 1 and 2 cubic yards, compare bag convenience with bulk pricing. Above 2 cubic yards, bulk delivery is usually more cost-effective.
