How much area does a pine straw bale cover?
A standard pine straw bale covers about 25–30 square feet at 3–4 inches depth. Coverage varies by bale size and compression.
How thick should pine straw be applied?
Apply pine straw 3–4 inches deep for new applications, or 1–2 inches for annual refreshment. Fluff the straw after application for best coverage.
How much extra mulch should I buy?
A 5–10% allowance is common for standard beds. Irregular shapes, slopes, or uncertain measurements may justify 10–15%. The calculator suggests a starting point that you can change.
Should I use bags or bulk mulch?
Bagged mulch is practical below 1 cubic yard for small beds. Between 1 and 2 cubic yards, compare bag convenience with bulk pricing. Above 2 cubic yards, bulk delivery is usually more cost-effective.
