Planning guidance

Common mulch estimate questions.

How deep should playground mulch be?

Playground mulch depth depends on equipment fall height. For equipment up to 8 feet, 9–12 inches is typical. Always follow CPSC guidelines and manufacturer recommendations.

What type of mulch is best for playgrounds?

Engineered wood fiber (EWF) and rubber mulch are common choices. Both provide cushioning, but rubber mulch requires less maintenance and doesn't compact as much.

How much extra mulch should I buy?

A 5–10% allowance is common for standard beds. Irregular shapes, slopes, or uncertain measurements may justify 10–15%. The calculator suggests a starting point that you can change.

Should I use bags or bulk mulch?

Bagged mulch is practical below 1 cubic yard for small beds. Between 1 and 2 cubic yards, compare bag convenience with bulk pricing. Above 2 cubic yards, bulk delivery is usually more cost-effective.
