Planning guidance

Common mulch estimate questions.

How deep should mulch be for new garden beds?

New garden beds typically need 3–4 inches of mulch. This provides weed suppression, moisture retention, and a finished appearance.

How much mulch to add when refreshing?

Annual refreshment typically needs 1–2 inches. Fluff existing mulch first, then add enough to restore the original depth without over-mulching.

How deep should mulch be around trees?

Apply 2–4 inches around trees, but keep mulch 3–6 inches away from the trunk to prevent rot and pest issues. Extend to the drip line if possible.
