Planning guidance

Common mulch estimate questions.

How much mulch is in a standard bag?

Most mulch bags are 2 cubic feet, but 1, 1.5, and 3 cu ft sizes are also available. Always check the volume printed on the bag.

How many bags of mulch do I need for a 10x10 area?

A 10×10 area at 3 inches deep is about 2.78 cubic yards. With 2 cu ft bags (0.074 cu yd each), you would need about 38 bags. Add 2–4 extra bags for waste.

How much extra mulch should I buy?

A 5–10% allowance is common for standard beds. Irregular shapes, slopes, or uncertain measurements may justify 10–15%. The calculator suggests a starting point that you can change.

Should I use bags or bulk mulch?

Bagged mulch is practical below 1 cubic yard for small beds. Between 1 and 2 cubic yards, compare bag convenience with bulk pricing. Above 2 cubic yards, bulk delivery is usually more cost-effective.
