How this estimate is calculated
This is a planning estimate. Confirm mulch type, site conditions, supplier yields, and application recommendations before ordering.
A reliable estimate in four steps
Measure once. See the math. Buy with confidence.
- 1Choose the bed shape
Select the geometry that matches your mulching area.
- 2Enter measured dimensions
Use US or metric units and adjust individual fields when needed.
- 3Review the waste allowance
Use the project suggestion or enter a value that matches site conditions.
- 4Compare purchase options
Use the recommended bag count or bulk quote quantity as a starting point.

Planning guidance
Common mulch estimate questions.
How deep should wood chips be for pathways?
Pathway wood chips typically need 4–6 inches depth for stability and weed suppression. Replenish annually as chips decompose.
Are wood chips good for garden beds?
Yes. Wood chips suppress weeds, retain moisture, and improve soil as they decompose. Apply 2–4 inches deep, keeping away from plant stems.
How much extra mulch should I buy?
A 5–10% allowance is common for standard beds. Irregular shapes, slopes, or uncertain measurements may justify 10–15%. The calculator suggests a starting point that you can change.
Should I use bags or bulk mulch?
Bagged mulch is practical below 1 cubic yard for small beds. Between 1 and 2 cubic yards, compare bag convenience with bulk pricing. Above 2 cubic yards, bulk delivery is usually more cost-effective.
